A loan of $5,575 helps a member to buy more coffee plants to grow for their beans.

Mujeres De Galilea Group's story

There are seven Kaqchikel Mayan women in this communal bank living in the department/state of Chimaltenango. They know the importance of a good education, even though it is not free in Guatemala. For this reason, they have their own businesses where they earn an income so they can afford to educate their children. They run agricultural businesses and prepare delicious food.

Lorena is a 41-year-old woman who learned farming from her parents. She is a married woman who knew that at some point she would establish her own business. Lorena attended school for just three years, but she is working to see that her four children, aged 7 to 23 years, have a complete education.

Seven years ago Lorena started planting coffee, which she sells from May to July. For nine months she tidies up the land and grows more coffee. To generate other income, Lorena also sells food. She knows it is time to start planting, so she is requesting her first Kiva loan to buy more coffee plants. Lorena wants to guarantee quality products in the future.

The Mujeres De Galilea appreciate the monthly educational training that is part of the Microcredit Plus program offering loans and information on health, nutrition, hygiene and prioritizing expenses. Through this process women gain self-esteem and become empowered. During this difficult time they also receive valuable information about COVID-19 and the importance of wearing a mask, physical distancing and constant handwashing.

Thank you!
