A loan of $25,000 helps a (2x Kiva Borrower!) Black woman artist grow a groundbreaking BIPOC performing arts venture.

Denise's story
For 13 years, I’ve given everything I have—my time, my savings, my heart—to keep our nonprofit alive. This isn’t just a job for me; it’s a calling. I created this organization to serve as a home for African American artists, a place where we are seen, heard, and valued across theatre, film, poetry, and community programming. Our festivals are just one part of what we do. Our work extends year-round, nurturing artists, building careers, and creating space where our stories matter.
Thankfully, I haven’t done it alone. I’ve been blessed with a supportive board that shares this vision. They’ve stood by me, helped guide our growth, and lent their time and resources to keep us moving. Together, we’ve built something that serves not just artists—but the entire community.
In 2024, with their support, I expanded our reach by forming partnerships with both prominent and grassroots arts organizations. We created a collaborative network that brings more visibility and opportunity to underrepresented voices. Our most recent festival was a cultural milestone—but behind the scenes, the financial strain has been relentless.
With government support declining and arts funding shifting, keeping everything going has become a constant uphill battle. I’ve done all I can on my own, and I’m at a place where continuing without outside support is no longer possible.
This Kiva loan would give us room to breathe. It will help us cover rent, secure programming space, reach new audiences through marketing, and maintain the structure that holds our work together.
Your support helps more than one event—it helps preserve an ecosystem built to empower Black artists and ensure their stories continue to move forward. With your help, we won’t just survive—we’ll grow.
