including yours.

Kiva internships

Kiva is a nonprofit dedicated to expanding financial access to help underserved communities thrive. Since 2005, over 5.5 million people have used Kiva loans to start businesses, feed their communities, or develop climate solutions that benefit us all.
Apply for a volunteer internship and join the passionate community of people dedicated to making that possible.

Intern applications open twice a year:
winter starting in January, and summer starting in July.

“My internship at Kiva was a meaningful experience where I felt supported by an amazing team and
a mission-driven culture. As an intern, I was trusted with real responsibilities and could see how my work contributed to expanding financial access. That sense of purpose and the people I worked with made it an easy decision to come back full-time.”

— Roma, Senior risk analyst, Kivan and former intern

Why become a Kivan?

Big change starts here. A social impact internship with Kiva gives you
six months of hands-on learning with an innovative, internationally-recognized nonprofit at the intersection of technology and social impact, complete with a modest stipend.  With volunteer intern positions available across the organization, you'll contribute to meaningful projects while working with a supportive team of Kiva employees (aka Kivans!). Develop your professional skills, grow your career, and make lifelong friends and valuable connections along the way. Kiva interns have a wide range of backgrounds, and some have even come back to work full-time!

“My internship at Kiva was incredibly supportive and filled with people from many different backgrounds and walks of life, all united
by a shared mission. During my internship, I felt encouraged to grow, try new things, and apply my strengths in ways that created real impact both within the organization and throughout the world. I am proud to continue to contribute to these things as a full-time employee.”

— Joseph, U.S. operations associate, Kivan and former intern

“After finishing my Peace Corps service I was eager to learn about international development from the corporate side and Kiva was the perfect fit! During my internship, I had the opportunity to collaborate with Kivans around the globe, many of whom had decades of experience in international development and philanthropy. I am immensely grateful that my internship not only helped me develop, but also led me to a full-time position at Kiva.”

FAQs

Internships are posted about 2 months before the internship starts: mid-late October for the winter cycle and mid-May for the summer cycle.

It depends on the role. Some will require a presentation or take-home assignment. You’ll know if this is required after step two, speaking
with our People & Culture team.

Kiva interns must be 21 years of age by the start of the internship. You must also be fluent in English and authorized to work in the country
we’re hiring for.

U.S.-based internships are fully remote and we welcome applicants from all over the country. We sometimes hire interns for our offices
in Bogotá, Nairobi, or Bangkok, where you would need to be a national of that country.

Most Kiva internships are part-time (24-32 hours per week) over 6 months.

All Kiva internships are unpaid volunteer positions, but a modest monthly stipend is provided.

We highly value an international culture at Kiva and encourage international applicants to apply. However, Kiva does not provide financial reimbursement or sponsorship for international visas. If you are an international applicant, you will need to have independent work
authorization prior to applying.

We can usually work with your academic institution to authorize academic credit for your internship.

Potentially! This depends on your ability to work 24-32 volunteer hours during typical working hours in the time zone in which your team
is based (Monday - Friday, 9am - 6pm). Kiva has teams in the U.S., Colombia, Thailand, and Kenya.

Internship positions don't automatically turn into staff positions at Kiva, but if there is a position that becomes available, we would consider current or former interns as we would any other applicant.

We provide professional development workshops (including a resumé review), and access to networking events and career panels within
the Kiva network and beyond. Once you successfully complete an internship, managers may also provide letters of recommendation.

Unfortunately, we are rarely able to accommodate internships shorter than the required 6 months. If you're unable to commit to the full
6-month period but are still interested in applying, please be sure to explain the limitations of your availability in your cover letter.

Unfortunately, we do not have many summer-only internships available. Most interns join the program either in January or July and serve a
6-month internship.
